    Day 1

    • You are currently homeless, switching between bad hotels and sleeping in your van parked in the alley, which hasn’t started in a week. Millie is a disabled veteran so you were receiving some financial help but for some reason, the checks have been cut to a fraction of what they were recently and you don’t know why. Both of you were kicked off of FoodShare recently after you lost your jobs because you weren’t able to meet the work requirements anymore. To top it off, the local soup kitchen is currently closed so how will you get food for today?

    Day 2

    • Because you had to spend more on food yesterday, you have less to spend on food today. Knowing this, today you went to re-apply for FoodShare benefits. Under FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET), you need to meet an exemption in order to qualify for FoodShare benefits without working. One of the exemptions is homelessness, but the state worker you spoke to said that you weren’t really homeless because you stay in a hotel room on occasion and therefore you won’t be able to get the ‘homeless exemption’ within the guidelines of the work-requirement rules.

    • Good news! When visiting your local soup kitchen for lunch, an ACCESS team member from Hunger Task Force was there doing outreach. You went to talk to them and found out that the state worker misinformed you – you DO qualify for the homeless exemption. You can now re-apply for FoodShare and get benefits instated today! AND, your disability check came in full yesterday so you were able to fix the starter on your van so off to the Social Service agency you go!
